A Failed Unit or Worse....
A client contacted us to carry out on-site structural bonding. They also requested that we glaze the units, as well as ensuring that all the works were carried out as per the manufacturers recommendations.
We were more than happy to carry out this request. It was noted that the edge seal for the units were loose. We contacted the client to confirm that they had requested 'silicone edge seal units'. Following this confirmation, it was discovered that the units had a hot melt edge seal with a smear of silicone over the top. This in itself is not the correct way for a unit to be manufactured, let alone for a bonding application to be completed.
Should these units have been put in place and bonded, at best the units would have failed shortly after installation, but in the worse case scenario the outer pane would have de-bonded potentially causing the glass to fall out.
With all structural bonding works all IGU's should have a silicone edge seal, as it is impervious to the suns UV rays. Edge seal made of polysulphide or butyl are UV intolerant. The UV rays will cause the edge seal to de-bond leading to either a failed unit at best, or the panel falling out.
As you can see from the above, this is why it is best to ensure that the person you have carrying out your bonding works are approved and accredited by the manufacturers.
